Electric supercar maker takes on Tesla with robotaxi start-up

Verne is the new name for a robotaxi company formed by the makers of Rimac supercars, scheduled to start operating in 2026 as a ‘Journey to the Future of Mobility’ aiming to democratise autonomous ride-sharing.

Previously known as Project 3 Mobility, the rebrand is a tribute to 19th-century science-fiction author Jules Verne, whose works include Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

The new company will manufacture a two-seat autonomous robotaxi in Zagreb, Croatia, for global use from 2026.

With US electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla planning to unveil an electric robotaxi in August 2024, Mate Rimac – the name behind the Rimac electric supercar brand which also counts the Bugatti brand among its stable – says his new company’s focus is not about being first but delivering a ‘perfect’ customer experience.
