Tesla’s Self-Driving Robotaxis May Get a China Rollout First

Musk recently said that Tesla would unveil a self-driving “robotaxi” in August. Now the state-owned English-language newspaper China Daily reports that the full self-driving Tesla taxi will be tested and launched in China.

The decision may have come as a result of Musk’s visit to China last month, news site Business Insider suggests. Though Tesla has not commented on the matter — as is typical of the company, which also recently slashed its marketing team — the Chinese newspaper said that the government gave partial support to Musk’s idea that the full-self-drive vehicle could roll out as part of the country’s taxi system. The Chinese EV market is among the world’s most active and competitive, with multiple domestic manufacturers jockeying for market share.
