Do robotaxis drive better than humans? This S.F. driverless car company says yes

A new study by Waymo says the company’s fully driverless taxis have a crash rate in San Francisco that is 90% lower than that of human drivers in the city.

The peer-reviewed study, published Wednesday, is the latest in a series of reports by the Alphabet-owned company examining its robotaxis’ performance, and is the first to attempt to compare how fully driverless Waymo taxis compare to human driving.

Waymo’s study covers the 7.1 million miles the company says its driverless taxis logged through the end of October without a human backup driver present. This includes 1.76 million driverless miles registered in San Francisco, with much of that activity happening in recent months as the company scaled up its driverless ride-hailing activity.
